The hospital is equipped with a level 3 Tertiary Neonatal unit catering to extreme preterm infants and sick newborns. Dr. Prashanth S Urs is Incharge of the unit. Apart from Neonatal Intensive care services Dr. Prashanth S Urs also provides Routine newborn care, High risk followup, Immunisations and services to Pediatric patients.

Mater Mothers hospital is a Tertiary referral unit for the state of Queensland accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Pediatrics and child health for advanced training in Neonatology and perinatology.

The Neonatal department has 70 neonatal beds with 25 high dependency cots. The unit is equipped with State of art facilities like High frequency /Pressure support ventilation, Nitric oxide & Cerebral function monitoring. Neonatal support is provided to neonates from a gestation of 24wks. The unit is well supported with all faculties, specially is a centre for Neonatal Cardiology. There is also an active Neonatal Transport responsible for retrieving sick neonates from all over the state and also neighboring states. The Department also runs a Growth and development clinic, for the follow-up of high risk infants discharged from the unit. The Maternal Fetal medicine is actively associated with the unit for planning and management of high risk pregnancies.

As a Fellow in Neonatology I was involved in the clinical care of extremely premature and critically ill Neonates in the intensive care, Liaison for the referring doctors, supervision and training of registrars and residents, teaching of year 4 Medical students from Queensland university and also took active part in the Short term follow-up clinic and in Growth and development clinic. I have gained extensive experience in all facets of Neonatal care of Critically ill neonates, neonatal cardiology, high-risk follow-up and also practice of evidence based medicine.
